Adv PS Swart (DA) to ask the Minister for Intelligence:  N69E 

(a) What total amount did his department and/or ministry (i) budget for and (ii) spend on (aa) advertising and (bb) other specified activities related to the celebration of 10 Years of Democracy from the date that the election date was gazetted up to and including the election day and (b) what specified media and/or publications were used to publicise the campaign around the celebration of 10 Years of Democracy?  

Reply: 

(i) Budget for:  

(aa) Advertising 

The Ministry has budgeted for R 40 000 for space in an impending publication commissioned by Parliament to celebrate the Ten Years of Democracy which is due to be published in July 2004. SASS and NIA did not budget for advertising.  

 (bb) other specified activities: 

NIA budgeted for R50 000 to host a Ten Year Celebration Dinner involving accredited Foreign Intelligence Services (FIS). SASS budgeted R400 000 for the production, publicising (excluding advertising) and launch of the Ten Year Review Report and the development and launch of a website.  

(ii) Spent on: 

(aa) R40 000 by the Ministry as in (aa) above. 

(bb) NIA spent R50 000 in hosting a Ten Year Celebration Dinner with Foreign Intelligence Services. SASS spent R215 985.83 on the production of the Ten Year Review Report, R20 742.00 on the SASS website, R208 168.85 on the launch event which was cancelled. 

The Ministry has budgeted for space in a publication commissioned by Parliament to celebrate the Ten Years of Democracy. NIA and SASS used their websites.
